Overview

Our Behavioral Specialist, as part of the camp team, works to support the wellbeing of camp staff members to set them up for success to fulfill their job duties. They support staff members and campers with behavioral or emotional health challenges. In addition, the Behavioral Specialist may be asked to provide education strategies and help develop behavioral action plans for individuals attending the camp facility. They will work with the Camp Nurse and Camp Health Officer as needed and will report to the Community Engagement and Registrar Director to provide support to staff members and campers. The Behavioral Specialist provides an atmosphere of respect, acceptance and caring for campers and staff members, and above all, contributes to the safety of all individuals at camp.

 

Pay Rate: $475.00/week. This position requires you to live at camp. Room and board are included. Camp staff training begins May 18, 2025.

Responsibilities

  • Assesses the behavioral status of campers and seasonal staff members through consultative contacts as needed. Identifies a behavioral support plan as needed to meet the needs of the individual and camp community.
  • Provides support to frontline summer staff for camper behavioral health issues in a timely manner.
  • Works closely with the Resident Camp Director, Day Camp Director, Health Officer, and Camp Nurses as needed to support campers and frontline staff members.
  • Lives in either cabin, yurt, or glamping tent accommodations.
  • Works with camp leadership to manage staff members and campers efficiently and effectively with mental, emotional, or social health (MESH) challenges.
  • Educate staff members and campers about care, prevention and support techniques as needed.
  • Monitors the camp’s behavioral health program, identifying program quality areas of improvement and making recommendations to camp leadership.
  • Keeps accurate records and documentation of support provided.
  • Understands, complies with, and promotes salient risk management standard operating procedures, policies, and guidelines as indicated by the Y of Northern Colorado.
  • Understands, complies with, and promotes the standards for camps set by the State of Colorado, American Camp Association, and any other applicable regulating bodies.
  • Maintains confidentiality of information as appropriate.
  • Maintain a professional presence through appropriate staff and camper interactions and adheres to Associations and Camps codes of conduct.
  • Attend all required staff meetings on time.
  • Adheres to program standards and expectations including safety and cleanliness standards.
  • Models’ relationship-building skills for campers and staff.
  • Incorporate the mission, philosophy, and 5 core values of the YMCA of Northern Colorado in all communication with participants and staff-members.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 21 years old.
  • Undergraduate degree in social work, psychology, human services, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum 1 year experience practicing as a school psychologist or therapist, behavioral consultant, licensed social worker, residential camp behavioral specialist, or other roles as a professional in MESH support.
  • Current RBT or similar certification preferred.
  • Prior experience and/or training in behavioral crisis response is highly preferred.
  • High level of comfort in working with individuals using a consultative style.
  • Ability to exercise balanced judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions, and to handle difficult or confrontational situations in a calm, consistent and equitable manner.
  • Must have a valid US driving license.
  • Completion of: Child Abuse Prevention for Supervisory Staff, Staff Training, WFA, CPR, AED, Bloodborne Pathogens. Lifeguard certification is a plus.
  • Completion of YMCA program-specific certifications.
